BMI Calculator for Men

Men tend to carry more muscle mass and less body fat than women at the same BMI. This means a man with a BMI of 26 might be lean and muscular rather than overfat — or genuinely overweight. Context matters. Athletes, bodybuilders, and highly active men often have elevated BMIs due to muscle, not fat. This calculator gives you a quick reading with notes on what BMI does and doesn't capture for men.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a muscular man have a high BMI but be healthy?
Absolutely. BMI does not distinguish between muscle and fat. A 6-foot man who weighs 220 lbs due to weight training has a BMI of 29.8 (overweight), but may have 12% body fat and excellent metabolic health. Waist-to-height ratio and body fat percentage are better indicators for muscular individuals.
What is a healthy BMI for men?
The standard healthy range is 18.5–24.9 for all adults. For men, some studies suggest the lowest all-cause mortality occurs around BMI 22–25. Very low BMI (<20) in men is associated with higher mortality risk than in women.
Does age affect BMI interpretation for men?
Yes. Men naturally lose muscle mass and gain fat as they age (sarcopenia), so the same BMI at 25 and 65 represents different body compositions. Older men may benefit from maintaining a BMI slightly above the low end of normal to preserve lean mass and bone density.
