Frequently Asked Questions

What is the BMI formula in metric units?
BMI = weight (kg) / height (m)^2. For example, a person weighing 70 kg and standing 175 cm tall: BMI = 70 / (1.75)^2 = 70 / 3.0625 = 22.9.
Why is metric the standard for BMI?
The BMI formula was originally defined by Adolphe Quetelet in the 1830s using metric units. The WHO, NHS, and most international health organizations use metric. The imperial conversion (lbs and inches) requires a multiplication factor of 703 to produce the same result.
What's a healthy BMI range?
18.5 to 24.9. Below 18.5 is underweight, 25–29.9 is overweight, and 30+ is obese. These are population-level guidelines — individual health depends on many more factors including body composition, activity level, and genetics.
